Advent Traditions
It’s the first day of December and our littles are anxiously awaiting their first treat from their advent calendars. The tiny chocolate treats are not my favorite pick, but I just can’t seem to get organized early enough to create the cute displays that incorporate other items.
The Danes have a great little tradition of lighting a candle everyday to count down to Christmas. They call it a kalendarlys, or light calendar. We couldn’t find one locally, so we made our own using a red candle and a gold paint pen. But if I understand hygge correctly, making something by hand only increases its hygge factor. And I agree. Every time I look at it, I feel a sense of accomplishment. It’s a great little hit of serotonin.
Our candles (we couldn’t stop at just one) are all ready to go for the first day of advent. The tiny flame brings warmth into our home, and helps us to reflect on the warmth we want to share with others this time of year.
What did I learn from this?
A tiny light can bring a flood of warmth.
