Savor every moment
The Swedes have a word – Lagom – that roughly translates into just right or perfect-simple but has also been said to mean “each day is good enough.” And perhaps I’ve taken this interpretation a little too far from the basic meaning, but I think it holds an even deeper meaning this way.
I recently celebrated a milestone birthday. And since I wanted to remember it in a positive light, I used the day to try out this theory of lagom. My approach was pretty simple: find the joy in each moment. And suddenly there were so many moments to be joyful! The day was not any different from most others. We went out to dinner together, watched a movie at home, and I opened a few presents. The majority of the day was filled with errands, work, and family. But that was the simple beauty of it.
I celebrated my life in all of its ordinary glory. I celebrated who I am, how good my life is, and the wonderful people who are part of it. And the day felt so much better for celebrating its ordinariness. A day that could have been full of selfishness and gloom was wonderful.
So I kinda dig this lagom thing. It feels good to put a little gratitude into our everyday life without any other purpose but to feel joy and amazement at what each moment gives us.
What did I learn from this?
Lagom, to me, is finding joy in the everyday moments.
